About the RAADS-R Test

The RAADS-R was built for one group in particular: adults. When Ritvo and colleagues set out to design it, several autism scales already existed for children and adolescents, but very few had been written for grown-ups. The RAADS-R was their answer to that gap in screening for adults on the autism spectrum.

The "R" stands for Revised. An earlier version, the RAADS, was reviewed and statistically re-analysed. The authors then added a fourth symptom area, circumscribed interests, added two more questions, and clarified the wording of several items. The result is the 80-statement version you take here. Its validation study was carried out at nine centers on three continents.

The RAADS-R also looks at your life in a particular way. Every statement asks you to separate the present from your earlier years: is this true of you now, was it true before you turned 16, both, or neither? That is why the questionnaire suits adults thinking back over their whole life, including people who first began to wonder about autism long after childhood.

How to Answer the RAADS-R Test Questions

How Can the RAADS-R Help You Understand Autism Traits?

Autism traits in adults can be easy to overlook. Many people learn to follow social rules, rehearse conversations, or copy the way others behave. Several RAADS-R statements ask about exactly this, so the effort that goes into "acting normal" becomes part of the picture rather than something that hides it.

Autism Traits the RAADS-R Measures in Adults

The 80 statements of this autism test for adults are grouped into four subscales. Each answer is worth 0 to 3 points, so every subscale has its own point range, and together they make up the 0–240 total.

  • Social relatedness — 39 statements, 0–117 points

    The largest part of the test. These statements ask how you read other people's feelings and intentions, how easily you make friends and keep up a conversation, and whether you follow rules or copy others to "act normal" in social situations.

  • Circumscribed interests — 14 statements, 0–42 points

    This subscale was added in the revised version. It asks about intense, narrow interests, a strong focus on detail, keeping lists or facts about favourite topics, and how upsetting it is when routines, routes or the direction of a conversation suddenly change.

  • Language — 7 statements, 0–21 points

    The shortest subscale. It looks at how literally you take what people say, for example whether idioms such as "wears his heart on his sleeve" make sense to you, whether you use phrases from films and TV in conversation, and how easy small talk feels.

  • Sensory-motor — 20 statements, 0–60 points

    These statements ask about sensitivity to sound, texture, clothing, smells and light, senses that seem to switch between very strong and very dull, repetitive movements such as rocking or hand flapping, and how your voice and coordination come across to others.

Is the RAADS-R suitable for children or teens?

No. The RAADS-R was designed and validated for adults — everyone in the original study was 18 or older — and its answer options ask you to compare how you are now with how you were before age 16. It isn't meant for teens or children, or to be filled in by a parent on a child's behalf.

Is the RAADS-R test reliable and accurate?

In its original validation study (Ritvo et al., 2011; 779 adults), the RAADS-R correctly classified 97% of autistic participants and 100% of the comparison group, and scores were highly consistent when people took it again (test–retest reliability 0.987). This online version uses all 80 original statements and the published scoring, so your total is calculated the same way.

What is a RAADS score?

On the published RAADS-R scale, the total for all 80 statements ranges from 0 to 240. Each answer counts 0 to 3 points, and a higher total means more of the traits the questionnaire asks about were reported.

How do I interpret my RAADS-R score?

Your total falls into one of six bands on this site: Minimal (0–49), Very low (50–64), Low (65–89), Moderate (90–129), High (130–159) and Very high (160–240). The commonly cited cut-off is 65: in the original study (Ritvo et al., 2011), no one in the non-autistic comparison group reached it, while autistic adults averaged 133.8.

What is the average RAADS-R score?

In the original validation study (Ritvo et al., 2011), autistic adults averaged 133.8 points and the comparison group averaged 26.0, out of a possible 240. A score of 65 was the threshold that best separated the two groups.

What is a normal RAADS-R score?

Scores below 65 are in the range of the non-autistic comparison group in the original study (Ritvo et al., 2011): that group averaged 26 out of 240, and none of them reached 65, the commonly cited cut-off. Autistic adults in the same study averaged 133.8.

Is a RAADS-R score of 150 considered high?

Yes. A score of 150 falls in the High band (130–159) on this site's scale. It is well above the commonly cited cut-off of 65 and above the 133.8 average of autistic adults in the original study (Ritvo et al., 2011).

Can you score high on the RAADS-R and not be autistic?

Yes, it can happen. The RAADS-R adds up the traits you report, and some of them — such as sensory sensitivity or difficulty in social situations — can also come with other conditions, for example social anxiety or ADHD. Your total shows how many of these traits you reported; the optional AI report looks at the pattern in your answers in more detail.
